Go with the flow: Bringing relaxed indoor living to a plain outdoor space
Creating a seamless indoor-outdoor living space is a great way to make use of our back patios year-round. Australia is renowned for a contrasting harsh climate, and we are people who love entertaining, especially outdoors. So being able to utilise an outdoor space, no matter what time of day or month of the year, is an essential aspect of many Australians’ lifestyle.
Recently we were presented with this very sort of challenge in Brighton Lakes, NSW, where our client was eager to bring life to their tired outdoor patio, transforming it into a stylish and functional space for living and entertaining.
Says Brennen: “The client wanted an outdoor area that could provide their family with year-round use. They were after a modern, beach-style vibe that still tied in with their existing dwelling.”
We approach all our projects by listening to the clients wants and needs first, then provide our knowledge and network to present a wide variety of construction aspects and material choices which fall within their pre-defined budget. Offering a range of options ensures that our clients feel empowered and comfortable to make key decisions on final designs for their space.
An important factor of this project is ongoing maintenance, which can influence the types of materials we use. “The client wanted design elements that had little to no maintenance, still using high-end material quality and finishes,” Brennen explains.
With years of experience and a strong network of quality craftsmen and suppliers, Brennen and his team provide the highest quality of work for his clients. This includes leading each project, from design to sourcing materials, through to final handover of the project itself.
“We used Stratco’s Outback steel frame, covered with their Cooldek insulated roofing,” explains Brennen. The Cooldek roofing provides protection from the elements and can conceal all electrical. This allows the ability to house accessories such as dimmable downlights, fans and even heat strips. The flexibility means that the space can be used on a cold winters night and is comfortable enough right through those hot summer days.
Composite decking from Outdure, sitting on a termite and rot-proof Qwickbuild aluminum frame, was an ideal choice, not only for ease of construction, but also for creating that indoor-outdoor flow.
“One of the benefits of this QwickBuild® system is that it can be built as low as 71mm off the ground to up to 2m above the ground, so no matter what the project is we can adjust the height to suit that indoor-outdoor flow perfectly,” explains Brennen. “From setting heights with the adjustable pedestals to installing the marine grade aluminium bearers and joists, installation was efficient and done with minimal effort. The composite decking on the marine-grade aluminium frame ensured longevity of the product and a really low maintenance option for our clients.”
To anchor the outdoor design and truly exude the feeling of another room, the team also made space for an Escea gas fireplace ensconced in a Caesarstone mantlepiece, above which the client added a wall-mounted TV. A light timber dining setting, separate cushioned lounge space and statement plants round out the entertaining space, with the addition of Stratco Aluminum Ezi-Slat screening to afford the owners added privacy.
“Everything we constructed for them was an essential part for their outdoor space,” says Brennen. “From insulated roofing, privacy, ability for warmth and cooling… and having little to no maintenance at all.”
With the four-week project completed to time, our client was extremely happy to be able to enjoy the space immediately. “We absolutely love the finished product,” they said. “We can’t speak highly enough of the build – love the colours, love how it’s come up and we look forward to the rest of our lives with this room.”
